The ideological interpellation of individuals as combatants: An encounter between Reinhart Koselleck and Michel Foucault

Althusser's "interpellation" was criticized because of denying any role in social and political transformation for 'agency'. However, according to Edwards (2007) it's necessary to reject accounts of social and political change that prioritize the causal autonomy of the subject. He substitutes Althusser's subject with (social and political) combatants.

Foucault's archeology and Koselleck's Begriffsgeschichte are concerned with the description of particular conceptual structures and their relationship to other conceptual structures.

"In contrast to a social history, Begriffsgeschichte (conceptual history) is concerned with text and words."

"Begriffsgeschichte is not an attempt to explain the meaning of political texts in terms of context"

Begriffsgeschichte aims to show in which way ideologies allow individuals to contest and transform the character of social and political life.

While the object of Begriffsgeschichte is the concept, the elementary form of archeology is the enunciation. Enunciation can be seen as 'practice', inscribed in a variety of media and spaces, responsible for constituting subjects. Within this approach, it's possible to formulate the concept of martyrdom as the object of Begriffsgeschichte and the Edirnekapı Martyrs' Cemetery as a statement constitutive of discourse or simply, enunciation.
